DIY AWTRIX Status Light: Parts List & Build Guide

A pixel-matrix status light that shows both a solid alert color and actual text (“IN MEETING”, camera icon, etc.), driven by AWTRIX NG firmware over MQTT into Home Assistant. This page is the build authority — if something here conflicts with a memory of how we did it, this page wins; fix the page, not the memory.

The Setup This blog runs on Hugo. The source lives in a self-hosted Forgejo instance. When I push a commit, a Forgejo Actions runner builds the site and drops the output where the busybox web server can find it. The busybox webserver is a container running a naught but a single command. Traefik handles HTTPS and reverse proxy for all those bits. The Pieces Hugo Hugo is a static site generator that uses Markdown (along with TOML).

The Story So Far None of the links here are affialate links, they are just Amazon links for what I bought, no tracking, I don’t profit as all from them, they are just to make your life esier The kids are home from school for the summer and my home “office” is a corner of my bedroom. As kids are want to do they often pop into my room to ask a question or just get some attention.

Something Warm

I know our home isn’t normal even though it feels normal to us. The reality is that not every home is open, welcoming, and affirming. Some days it’s easy to forget how different places can be. Today highlighted that for me. My son brought home his paramour to stay for a week. It wasn’t the happy, loud, chaos that overwhelmed them but rather the acceptance, respect, and love that envelops anyone who walks through our door.
