Home Assistant Personal Automation is a personal, single-user home automation project built on Home Assistant that integrates with Google Home / Smart Home services to control smart home devices in my own household. It is not a public product or service — there is exactly one user account in scope: my own. Purpose I run Home Assistant to control smart home devices (lights, thermostats, and similar) in my own house. This project is the bridge that lets me control those devices by voice or through the Google Home app, by connecting my personal Home Assistant instance to Google’s Smart Home platform.

The Setup This blog runs on Hugo. The source lives in a self-hosted Forgejo instance. When I push a commit, a Forgejo Actions runner builds the site and drops the output where the busybox web server can find it. The busybox webserver is a container running a naught but a single command. Traefik handles HTTPS and reverse proxy for all those bits. The Pieces Hugo Hugo is a static site generator that uses Markdown (along with TOML).

I know our home isn’t normal even though it feels normal to us. The reality is that not every home is open, welcoming, and affirming. Some days it’s easy to forget how different places can be. Today highlighted that for me. My son brought home his paramour to stay for a week. It wasn’t the happy, loud, chaos that overwhelmed them but rather the acceptance, respect, and love that envelops anyone who walks through our door.

The reality here is this isn’t really going to be an About Me as such. I won’t be mentioning my employer, using the real names of my family or friends, or anything like that. This is a pace for me to rant and little else. There are a few things that might make things here make a little more sense though: I am a Linux nerd through and through I am AMAB and identify as male (he/him) I am in my 50s My first Internet access was a dial up KORN shell I have a rather large family I have, currently, unmedicated ADHD That’s probably enough to make sense of most stuff I’ll post here.
